The GEUS, or Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, is dedicated to protecting and studying natural resources. They are an independent research institute under the Danish government. Many of the areas they study are important to Earth’s climate, such as glaciers and ice sheets.
Last year Spectra Symbol was asked to create a unique flex sensor and sensor control board for the GEUS. They intend to use it to measure how quickly ice melts in a Greenland ice sheet. The sensor is segmented and allows the control board to measure bends across very small sections - about an inch long. As the ice melts the sensor will flex, and the control board will allow the GEUS to see the readings in real time. The sensors and boards can be linked together to measure several meters of ice.
We shipped the first batch of these sensors last month. Thank you to all those who helped make this brand new tool happen!
Employees have to understand that they have a direct role to play in creating the kind of company they want, and creating such a company is their responsibility. You spend a good portion of your waking hours at work, so why not make it more than just punching the clock?
In 1735, Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter to his own paper, the Pennsylvania Gazette titled "Protection of Towns from Fire", in which he penned the following phrase:
"...an Ounce of Prevention is worth a Pound of Cure..."
It is interesting to note that his article was written as his opinion, as an "old citizen", on how the citizens of Pennsylvania could better prevent fires from starting in their homes and businesses. One thought that he wrote about was that, with a little attention to how individuals managed their coals and embers, the citizens of Pennsylvania could prevent a lot of damage, headache, and heartache as a result of raging fires that afflicted their early American town.
In like manner, companies adopt preventative measures to avoid the "fires" of wasted materials and customer dissatisfaction caused by defective products. For companies, preventative measures are most effective because preventing a unit from becoming defective at the earliest stage saves the labor and manufacturing overheads that would have been consumed had the unit moved on in production and the defect was identified at a later stage. It could honestly be reflective of the 1:16 ratio in Mr. Fanklin's analogy!
It is important to note that, quite often, these preventative measures have high costs associated with them and that is why they are considered a cost of quality, however, the cost of prevention is usually much less than the cost of finding faulty products after valuable materials, labor, and services have been completed.
For reference, these costs are associated with the design, implementation, and maintenance of the quality management system. They are planned and incurred before the actual operation, and they could include:
Product or service requirements: Establishment of specifications for incoming materials, processes, finished products, and services
Quality planning: Creation of plans for quality, reliability, operations, production, and inspection
Quality assurance: Creation and maintenance of the quality system
Training: Development, preparation, and maintenance of programs
Spectra Symbol has employed these same methods throughout our system with a robust Design Process that includes Quality Planning, ISO and FDA certifications to help ensure the maintenance of our Quality System, and continually working with employees to ensure they have the training they need for the work they perform.
Now, if we as Spectra Symbol Team Members can find those areas where we can implement activities that will better manage the embers and coals of faulty processes, materials or services we will prevent the raging infernos of defective products and unhappy customers. That should always be at the forefront of our minds as we handle and process products, as we design and plan for production processes, and as we develop and create new products. Sometimes, these activities may seem like a waste of time but remember any cost of time and revenue in preventing issues upfront will return many more times that in the end! After all, don't we all want to make more Franklins?
