Andrew Alliance, a subsidiary of Waters Corporation, produces technology for laboratory automation. Their products include pipettes controlled by a computer, a robotic arm that can move the pipettes, and the software and physical framework to make it all work together. This automation makes lab tests faster and more accurate. In fact, their equipment has been used for rapid Covid testing.
Spectra Symbol supplies Andrew Alliance with a HotPot for position control. This allows their machinery to move with the precision needed for complex lab work in sterile conditions. We provide an accurate, repeatable sensor at an affordable price, which helps them make life better for everyone.
The R&D software team has been working hard in the last months to build the Playdit website! Playdit will be a community-driven video game database, where users can post information about their favorite games and create collections of the games they’ve enjoyed.
The new website updates allow people to add information about games, developers, and publishers. Members of the community can also contribute the posters, backgrounds, and descriptions for each game - and as more are added, the community can select their favorite designs.
More functions will be added as time goes on, and eventually, we expect this to grow into a large part of the Spectra portfolio.
Lying and dishonesty have no place in business, nor does taking advantage of people, or bosses who act like S.O.B’s. We’ve all said it, karma can come back to you as we see someone finally get their comeuppance. You only gain credibility by telling the truth. Business doesn’t work unless employees believe you and one another. Be the kind of person for whom you want to work for and with. Let someone else keep karma busy.
Gemba is a Japanese word that means "the actual place." In lean manufacturing, gemba refers to the physical place where value is created. It can be a factory floor, a service desk, a hospital ward, or any location where products are made or services are delivered. The concept of gemba is deeply rooted in the principle of direct observation and is often associated with the phrase "go and see for yourself." It encourages managers, leaders, and improvement teams to visit the gemba regularly to gain a deep understanding of the processes, identify inefficiencies, and engage with frontline workers to improve productivity and quality.
By going to the gemba, we can witness the actual work being done, observe the flow of materials and information, and interact with employees involved in the process. This direct observation enables us to identify waste, such as overproduction, excess inventory, waiting time, unnecessary motion, and defects. The insights gained from gemba visits are vital for making informed decisions and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
In lean manufacturing, gemba is used as a cornerstone for various improvement practices, such as gemba walks and kaizen events. Gemba walks involve leaders and managers regularly visiting the gemba to engage with workers, ask questions, provide support, and encourage problem-solving at the source. These walks foster a culture of employee empowerment, as frontline workers are encouraged to share their ideas and suggestions for improvement directly with management.
Moreover, gemba-driven decision-making ensures that decisions are based on actual observations and data rather than assumptions or abstract reports. By focusing on the gemba, we can develop a better understanding of customer needs and expectations, leading to the development of more efficient and customer-centric processes. In essence, gemba is a powerful concept in lean manufacturing that fosters a culture of continuous improvement, employee involvement, and waste reduction by emphasizing the importance of understanding the reality of work at its source.
